As I look around, I see many who almost seem robotic as they go about them every days. They get up, get dressed, go to work, sit in their offices, come home, watch TV, go to bed, and get up and do it all over again. Days turn into weeks, which turn into months, which turn into years. Soon they're asking themselves 'What happened to my life?' 'Where did it go?' 'Why do not I feel fulfilled?' 'Is this all there is to life?'
We often live for tomorrow and as my grandmother used to say, 'tomorrow, tomorrow, never comes'. That feeling of fulfillment, purpose, and meaning never does either if we keep living for tomorrow. Nor does it when the focus is on filling up on the outside (new car, new house, new technological gadgets, etc.).
Well, I have great news! There IS a way to add more life to your life! If you want more meaning and purpose and to feel fulfilled, then read on …
The best (and only) way I've found to really feel filled up on the inside (instead of the outside where most of the western world focuses), is to give from your heart. Find a way to share your time, your energy, your heart and you'll be amazed at what happens. How do to that you ask?
One of the greatest ways is to volunteer — either with organizations, or simply find someone around you that could use a helping hand. Once you open your eyes to that, you'll find them everywhere !! If you want to go further afield, then jump into an adventure known as a 'volunteer vacation' or become a 'voluntourist', a new term coined for this growing trend.
It's an absolutely fantastic way of really becoming part of another community. Instead of staying at 5-star hotels at resorts and seeing the tourist sites, you'll become a temporary 'local' and experience the culture from the inside out. You'll develop new friendships with people from other lands and you'll hear their inspirational stories and marvel at their strong spirits. You'll learn things about yourself you never knew, and learn more about what it means to be a Canadian or American, or where you may be from, that you'll never realize until you live as a 'local' abroad.
You'll develop a new appreciation for what you do have, instead of lamenting over what you do not have. You'll feel more alive than you've ever felt, and know in your heart that your life has meaning. You'll be able to give of yourself and in giving, we always definitely get back much, much more. That's why I call it my 'selfish' work because instead of being a 'do gooder', I find myself more enriched and filled up from the inside that no amount of money could ever buy.
Without doubt, you will be changed. There will be a process of self-discovery and inner awareness as your sense of who you are, your place in this world, your perspective on the world and your sense of your purpose in life will be altered. Start now to think about your legacy and what you will do to leave this world a better place.
Try it and you'll see what I mean. I do have one big warning, however: IT'S ADDICTING. Having that fulfilling experience that leaves you knowing that you life has more meaning and purpose will make you want to do it again and again and again …
