Moto’s Style Touchscreen Gadget – Motorola Krave ZN4

Most of the popular phone makers are under pressure to release touchscreen mobile devices since the first iPhone launch. Thus we can see getting more and more touchscreen mobile device from different manufacturer in the market now. We have seen the Motorola Ming, which is a Moto first touchscreen phone that was wildly popular mainly in Asia, now the descendant of the Ming- the Krave ZN4 was released recently. This time the targeted market is back to US.

Design-Different from other

From the design of Motorola Krave ZN4, we can tell that Motorola has it own ways to design their touchscreen phone. The Motorola Krave ZN4 is took design cues from its own Ming-a flip style phone with a clear flip-up front (cover) protective screen. Interestingly, the front cover is allows be a touch screen too. Motorola Krave ZN4 don’t have many button. There are only Home and Power button above the display. The other keys are located around its perimeter including microSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, volume controls, micro USB power/connection port, lock switch, and voice-dialing and camera buttons. On the rear, lies the 2MP camera lens.

UI & Application – Simple and useful

Motorola has it own Touch UI for Moto Krave ZN4 and it is simple and efficient. Retrieving a contact, dialing a number, sending a message just works and there wasn’t any involuntary action triggered by a misplaced finger on the touch display. The phone has no keyboard, so you will have to enter data by tapping on a portrait-style T9 keypad or a landscape-format QWERTY and both with slight vibrating feedback. The Krave also come with many software preinstalled such as Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, AOL, AIM and POP3, IMAP email for emailing and AIM, Windows Live and Yahoo! Messenger, for instant messaging. For GPS functionality, Motorola Krave ZN4 does a nice job with VZ Navigator, thanks to Verizon Wireless. VZ Navigator is very responsive and high accuracy.

Multimedia-TV is fun

The Verizon Wireless has introduce V Cast Mobile TV and V Cast Music store for Motorola Krave. Through these application you can easily enjoy music and video easily, but you got to be the VW subscriber. In order to play these files, there is a multimedia player in Motorola Krave supports mostly all popular music and video formats. The V Cast music store was the least responsive app on this phone, you can purchase songs from the store. The V Cast Mobile TV service allows you to watch TV program such as Comedy Central, ESPN, and Nickelodeon. However you got to put the phone on the table to watch TV, because its block the antenna reception when you hold its on hand. In term of camera, just as we expected, the only 2 MP camera pretty disappointing, though not completely irredeemable. You can’t change the resolution of your photos, like other same level phone did.The quality weren’t terrible though, but they weren’t great either.

Conclusion – Still have ways to go

We can tell that Motorola has attempt do to a different kind of touchscreen phone from being ‘iphone-like’ touchscreen phone. However, the Motorola Krave ZN4 is still left behind. The only advantage of Krave is its multimedia capabilities. There are many improvement can do on this phone such as web navigation, camera, and etc. To be honest Krave was a disappointment.
